Dazzle Ships
Here's a fascinating article on the WWI-era practice of "Dazzle Painting" or "Razzle Dazzle."

Basically, the ships were painted with complex, colorful patterns to confuse the torpedomen on German U-Boats.

The ships themselves were quite beautful.

Incidentally, i'd imagine that this is where OMD got the title 'Dazzle Ships'

If you were putting off getting a passport...
You might want to do it in the next 11 months, as all U.S. passports will contain RFID chips starting October 2006.

I dunno about you, but the last thing I want in my pocket when i'm on vacation in this political climate is a beacon that's constantly saying "I'm an American! I'm an American!"

Yes, you can turn your pocket into a faraday cage and block the transmission, but me, I'll get my passport before then and avoid it altogether.

New Boards Of Canada!!!!!!!!

It will be in my iPod by the time I'm out of the shower. Things are looking up.

Listened to it on the way to work, and I have declared it to be GOOD.

'Satellite Anthem Icarus' is possibly one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. The Boards have managed to integrate acoustic guitar into their kaleidoscopic 1979 dreamscape sound. The whole thing sounds like the remix they recently did for Boom Bip, which is a very good thing. I(t's evolution, not revolution, this time around, but it's still rather amazing.

Here's some more about the new album in this great Pitchfork media interview.

Mike: Maybe. In the late-80s the three bands that were a huge influence on us were Front 242 to some extent, and-- to a large extent-- Nitzer Ebb and the Cocteau Twins. And they don't actually fit in the same category...

Marcus: ...but we would listen to them at the same time. Maybe it's a slightly gothic thing. You can imagine that there was already a seed planted there where that was going in two different directions. I actually rate bands like Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson who are a hybrid of electronic and guitar music. I think they are brilliant but the kind of people who are into that kind of thing now are not as broad-minded as maybe people were 20 years ago.

There's also a shocking revelation in the article that I don't want to give away.

In the meantime, here's another DJ mix:

DJ doktorboring's eclectronica mix (1:09, 49.5mb mp3)

Starts off with some fun, clubby industrial, techno and EBM, and veers into some late 80's/early 90's danceable alternative stuff. Tracklist when I get home. (laerm, there's something for you at around 9:30 or so.)

He might replace the old with the moon
I accidentally stumbled across a webpage put together by Mike Thorne tonight. I was looking for info on a certain wire song (I was wondering what that weird noise in the middle of 'Strange' is, for those of you who know Pink Flag at all.) I had known that Mike Thorne produced Wire's first three albums, but i had no idea he as so important to the history of so much music I love:

The first three Wire LPs (the third of which, 154, is possibly the best post punk album ever. I've said so in another post about 9 months ago, but I can't be arsed to find it.)
The first three Soft Cell LPs
pretty much everything The Bronski Beat ever put out

and if that's not enough, two of the greatest singles ever put to wax- Soft Cell's "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go" and 'Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry".

Did I mention he had the sixth Synclavier ever made?

So my point is that this guy is important, and you should to listen to one of the albums he produced right now. And if you're still curious, go look here for stories about making these awesome records. Here's a great quote:

"Wire said I should play synthesizers on the next album. I said, 'I can't move my fingers fast enough.' They said, 'If you don't do it, we'll get that Brian Eno in.' I said, 'OK.'

And in the interest of amusing you (and for those unfamiliar with these gems), I've got three classic Mike Thorne productions up for you to enjoy:

Wire- Blessed State

Soft Cell- Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?

Til Tuesday- Voices Carry

Solid State Logic
Well, jury duty's done... almost was on a murder case, but it wound up not going to trial. Might have been interesting, but waking up an hour and 45 minutes before my usual time blows.

Got let out, came home early and did some laundry and housekeeping. alice_unbound will be here soon, no doubt telling me how awesome the U2 show was.

Tomorrow, le_futurisme will be here to pick up her psych textbook. other than that, I'm just playing XBox and listening to mp3s all week. :P.

I'm tired. Here's a meme:

a few things...
a few things...

I have fucking Jury Duty tomorrow. This saddens me, as I need to wake up by about 7am in order to attend to this arduous duty. On the plus side, I'll be home nice and early tomorrow, and i'll be able to catch up on my reading while waiting to be called. Blech.

I've been in the new apartment for a little over a month now, and i'm really blissfully happy here. I've already had a few folks over, and i'm sort of having to do a few small housewarming parties instead of one big one, as the place is so small. I have plenty of beer in the fridge, folks. come on over!

Things are going swimmingly with alice_unbound. It gets better and better with each day, without falling into a rut. It's wonderful. My other friends are pretty awesome too.... you know who you are.

Thanks to a friend of kingmob23, I bought a 30" widescreen HDTV Suddenly, I really, really like watching TV again. :P In all seriousness, i find myself more interested in watching movies and all the cartoons i recored on my DVR now that I have a nice big clear screen to watch them on. It also makes my video games look amazing, so I've been hitting the Xbox pretty hard. Picked up a few used games: Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Robotech Battlecry, and Enter the Matrix. Great stuff, and they look phenomenal on an HDTV. Come over and play!

ok... someone buy me this. What a great idea.

Ok, kids, go get the album I am listening to right now immediately. You will be blown away that Khonnor was a mere 16 years old when he released this.

I guess that's it for now...

The Friday Five
1. What kind of computer do you have? (Mac, iBook, Dell, etc.) I have 2 Macs, a Dual 1.8ghz G5 tower with 2gb of ram, and an 867mhz Powerbook G4 with 1152mb of ram. Both of those are running OS X 10.4 There's a PIII450mhz running XP with 256mb in a corner that I haven't bothered to hook up.
2. How old is it? Are you happy with it? The G5 is a year old, and it's my baby.  The Powerbook is about 2 years old, (I've had it about 6 months.)  I like it, but it's getting a bit long in the tooth.  The PC is about 5 years old.  Bleh.
3. How many computers are in your household? (at home if you are away at school) I live by myself, so it's just the three.
4. What are your favorite games/timewasters on your computer? The Internet is the great timewaster.  That having been said, I love me some Warcraft 3.
5. If money were no object, what kind of computer would you like to have?  I'd like the Dual 2.7gh G5 with 8gb of ram and a 30 inch cinema display.  :P

Bad motherfucker
This looks like it will be the best movie ever.

I have an embarrassing request...

my aunt bought me an RPG book at a garage sale recently. (GURPS CthulhuPunk, if you're interested,) and it sort of reminded me how much I really miss roleplaying.

So, I'mm gonna fly my geek flag here and see who salutes. Anyone want to play a once or twice a month Rifts game? Nothing too serious, and novice gamers more than welcome.

Barring that, does anyone know where I can either find or post and ad looking for other people in NY who might want to play? Lemme know.

You'll never guess what happened to me last Sunday.

Basically found farmacy site with the cheapestcosts.

Since then 4 times in one day? yes its true

you should experince that good stuff, the final word from the experts.

So apparently, my LaCie D2 drive bit it. Actually, I'm pretty sure the drive is ok, but the Oxford 911 chipset shit the bed. So it's time to purchase a new drive case. i'm thinking going for FireWire 800 this time. (Unless any of you have an empty Lacie D2 case you're not using? :P)

Other than that, my life's pretty damn good.
