Dazzle Ships

Here's a fascinating article on the WWI-era practice of "Dazzle Painting" or "Razzle Dazzle."

Basically, the ships were painted with complex, colorful patterns to confuse the torpedomen on German U-Boats.

The ships themselves were quite beautful.

Incidentally, i'd imagine that this is where OMD got the title 'Dazzle Ships'

If you were putting off getting a passport...

You might want to do it in the next 11 months, as all U.S. passports will contain RFID chips starting October 2006.

I dunno about you, but the last thing I want in my pocket when i'm on vacation in this political climate is a beacon that's constantly saying "I'm an American! I'm an American!"

Yes, you can turn your pocket into a faraday cage and block the transmission, but me, I'll get my passport before then and avoid it altogether.

New Boards Of Canada!!!!!!!!

It will be in my iPod by the time I'm out of the shower. Things are looking up.

Listened to it on the way to work, and I have declared it to be GOOD.

'Satellite Anthem Icarus' is possibly one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. The Boards have managed to integrate acoustic guitar into their kaleidoscopic 1979 dreamscape sound. The whole thing sounds like the remix they recently did for Boom Bip, which is a very good thing. I(t's evolution, not revolution, this time around, but it's still rather amazing.

Here's some more about the new album in this great Pitchfork media interview.

Mike: Maybe. In the late-80s the three bands that were a huge influence on us were Front 242 to some extent, and-- to a large extent-- Nitzer Ebb and the Cocteau Twins. And they don't actually fit in the same category...

Marcus: ...but we would listen to them at the same time. Maybe it's a slightly gothic thing. You can imagine that there was already a seed planted there where that was going in two different directions. I actually rate bands like Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson who are a hybrid of electronic and guitar music. I think they are brilliant but the kind of people who are into that kind of thing now are not as broad-minded as maybe people were 20 years ago.

There's also a shocking revelation in the article that I don't want to give away.
